Over the Edge: May 13, 2023Arnett TwinsShelby Arnett

Last year, I watched my twin sister go Over The Edge for the first time. It was inspiring and emotional to see siblings, friends, mothers, fathers, and supporters stand beside participants and cheer one another on. As I watched brave souls repel off the Hyatt in Downtown Louisville, I knew I wanted to do more to support Gilda's Club and support families who have been impacted by cancer.

I've watched my own family members battle and defeat cancer, and I have always wanted to do more. In college, I participated in DanceBlue at the University of Kentucky, which is a student-led organization that raises money to support the kids of Kentucky Children's Hospital Hematology/Oncology clinic. Throughout all four years, I had the opportunity to meet the families and kids who have been affected by such a horrible disease. What I noticed, first and foremost, is how joyful these children and families are. I noticed this at Over The Edge, too – despite the battle they are fighting or have fought, these individuals have the brightest and most genuine smiles. They are laughing; they are happy. Sharing in this genuine joy was enough for me to recognize that I not only want to do more - I need to do more.

I am going Over The Edge this year for my sister, whose work and passion are rooted in Gilda's Club. It is for my family members who have been affected by cancer, and for every person fighting this battle. Gilda's Club is an inspiring, compassionate organization, and I feel lucky to take part in Over The Edge this year.
